Physical Education and Sport

All pupils have access to the age-appropriate Physical Education curriculum as part of their normal school day. They are also encouraged to take part in the wide variety of extra-curricular activities on offer in order to develop their interests and to achieve their full potential. Bute House is very fortunate to have all its sports facilities on site.

Each class has four lessons of PE a week taught mainly by specialist teachers. The girls are taught a variety of the following activities according to their ages: games skills, netball, tennis, lacrosse, gym, dance, rounders, athletics and swimming. Only through enjoyment of the subject will they learn new skills and have a desire to do more. The girls develop their fitness and co-ordination in games and gymnastics, experience team sports and become competent swimmers (an essential life preserving skill). Through team sports they experience competition, learn to cope with winning and losing and understand the importance of cooperation and working together as a team.

Individual profiles are kept on each child to monitor her development, skills, knowledge and understanding throughout the school.

At Bute House we are lucky to have team teaching  in all swimming and games lessons. This allows us to stretch the able children and also give close attention to those who find activities and skills difficult to master, as the girls are usually given instruction in groups of ten.

There are sports clubs every day. These include gymnastics, football, touch rugby, cricket, badminton, dance aerobics, tennis, swimming and cross country. There are also team practices for selected girls in the following: gymnastics, netball, swimming, cross country, tennis and football. There are regular sports fixtures against local schools and Bute House also takes part in many local and national competitions with great success.
